“Multinationals or Mafia” by Toufic Beainy and Nicolas Faure
Book presented by the president of the Cercle Aristote, Mr. Pierre-Yves Rougeyron and published by Perspectives Libres.
This writing is to be linked to the theme of business ethics and governance, which is becoming a major societal concern in our modern societies.
A CEO of a multinational company and a mob boss. Identical while being different? But what are we talking about exactly?
The aim of the authors in this essay is to prove the multiple similarities that exist between the CEO of a multinational company as described by the business press and audio-visual works, with a mafia godfather, camped by Don Corleone, and embodied in the trilogy “The Godfather” by Francis Ford Coppola (1972). The essayists by practicing back and forth and comparisons in terms of concepts and ideas between these two characters, especially with the help of the social sciences, demonstrate the interaction between these two types of individuals who belong to two worlds completely. different and yet so similar in some ways. Doesn’t the info-sphere promote mimetic desire as described by René Girard which could encourage these two personalities to try to constantly want to be alike? So where is the line between good and evil, between the Ethics of conviction and the Ethics of responsibility as Max Weber would say? The demonstration provided is chilling and shivers down your spine. It reminds the reader of the topicality of the phenomenon and its exponential development, notably due to globalization.
